Day 2 : Quote on Beauty – Kevyn Aucoin

Kevin Aucoin is a great makeup artist who wrote many books on makeup and launched his own makeup line.

The quote I’m featuring today was brought to my attention by another makeup artist that I follow on YouTube, Wayne Goss. If you’ve never heard of him, go check out his channel immediately. He’s down to earth and really talented. He gets right to the point and most of his videos are actually pretty short.

This quote is the tag line to his channel. I totally agree with it and think it’s a great way to remind ourselves what beauty is all about. True beauty comes from within and has nothing to do with our superficial layers. Beauty is of the soul. Kevyn Aucoin was gay and because of that was the object of bigotry and ostracism. This had a hand in making him even more aware of what makeup can and cannot do. It can certainly help with self confidence but it won’t cover up darkness.

Having said that, I totally support the idea that makeup can be a way of expressing oneself. Kevyn Aucoin was passionate about the transformative nature of makeup and addressed this in his many books. Makeup is fun, so we should just enjoy it!

I therefore need to mention another of his quotes here.

This is another quote that I believe is true. Makeup doesn’t of course substitute for true beauty but it also is performance, an opportunity for women (and drag queens, of course) to gleefully metamorphose with just a few strokes of a brush or beauty blender. As I said in my Day 1 post, I think everyone is beautiful in some way, a perfectly even face is boring, we need to embrace our quirks. Mistakes are important to help us grow.

In ‘Making Faces’’ Kevyn Aucoin celebrates all the different kinds of human faces. He grouped techniques under types, creating looks based on the some of the famous women we aspired to be. He created categories : the Chanteuse, the Bombshell, the Gamine. Each was defined by a particular makeup application, and each came with her own vignette.

Coming from an international family, with family members from different races and spread out over several continents, I truly believe diversity breeds richness and depth.

I think a good new year resolution would be to focus on the positive, try and find beauty around you, and in the people you meet.
